It's that time of year again - the season of gratitude! Building on last year's success at CCA, AAPASD is proud to present the 2024 "Education Excellence Award" to celebrate exceptional teaching at Torrey Pines High School (TPHS). This award aims to honor and encourage our dedicated teachers who have made a meaningful impact on students' academic journeys.
The selection process will primarily rely on student nomination, highlighting teachers' commitment and skill in fostering a passion for learning. By submitting a nomination for a teacher here who has inspired your curiosity and supported your growth, you'll also have the chance to win our weekly raffle for an OMOMO or Starbucks gift card. Please submit your nomination here.

Getting Items To Sell
The first thing anyone has to do in order to start a store is to find items to sell. First, see if you have any untouched items with labels, or still in the package. If you do not have any, collect all your old toys, then sort them by type: action figures, toy cars, and other categories can each go into separate labeled boxes. If you do not have any old toys, you can also buy things from the dollar store to sell at a slightly higher price. Once you get all your supplies and have all your items, no one knows that you are starting a store yet. So you need to garner people’s attention.
Getting Attention
One way to gather customers is to create giant signs. I recommend you to go to your nearest dollar store and purchase a poster board. Think of a catchy store name that will get people interested to look at your shop. Once you have come up with a store name, decorate the sign any way you want, use a cool font, and draw decorations around the shop name. If you are dexterous enough, try drawing colorful designs on balloons to create custom advertisements for your store.
Another way to catch people’s eye is to avoid having adults operating the sale. Sorry adults, but seeing a kid handling a shop is much more attractive than seeing an adult handling a shop. Other adults walking past your kid handling a shop will think it is inspiring for other children and will likely support your child’s store by buying something.
The third and final way to get people’s attention is to give out samples of the things you are selling, in a similar fashion to how Costco serves food samples. That will get kids’ attention, which can generate another purchase if they want to buy the toy to play with.
Annoying Things That Happen While Selling
The most annoying thing that can happen if you start a shop is when your partner quits without telling anyone. Seriously? Can you at least spare thirty seconds of your time to tell us that you are quitting? Another annoying thing is when people glance at your shop while walking past.I get it, it is normal, but it is still annoying. Time to brush up a smile and ask, “How may I help you?”
Solutions for Change is a non-profit charity that focuses on assisting families in regaining stability and helping them recover from challenges they have experienced as a result of addiction and homelessness. Their mission is to help families escape the "Churn" - a term they have coined to describe the current government-supported methods that aim to help the homeless, but ultimately result in more harm than good.
Unlike “Band-Aid” programs that simply give handouts, like homeless shelters, Solutions makes sure that the individuals and families who go through their program are not dependent on government assistance. Through their program, Solutions has created a space that builds strong, successful foundations that allow those in need to regain independence and lead successful lives for themselves and their family.
Although their approach has been successful for thousands of Overcomers (people who have gone through the program), they have unfortunately had to turn down millions of dollars due to a fundamental difference in belief. Solutions does not share the same one-size-fits-all belief that the government claims to be successful. Instead, they argue that there is not just one solution for those in poverty, and their success proves just that.
Recently, the Student Leadership Club (SLC) has had the fortunate opportunity to help Solutions for Change take care of the children in its program while their parents were able to enjoy their very first Prom Night. SLC served up nutritious and delicious food to the children, who had a blast.
It was a great opportunity to teach SLC volunteers how to serve and manage young children. This was a unique volunteering experience for the students and they learned a lot about the Solutions for Change program. This was a great introduction for our volunteers to see the amazing work that Solutions for Change does.
This was a great way to deepen our connection with Solutions for Change. We hope to continue collaborating with Solutions for Change to provide charitable volunteer opportunities to our students and help families in need.
