Distinguished Professor and Presidential Chair of UCSD. Dr. hwa is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and the Fellow of American Academy of Microbiology.
Terry received his B.Sc. from Stanford University, majoring in Physics, Biology, and Electrical Engineering, and Ph.D. in Physics from MIT. He did post-doctoral research at Harvard and Princeton, and has been at UCSD for 30 years.
Dr. Luo is an experienced biotech executive who has served as the CMO at many biotech companies, including Prometheus Biosciences and Oppilan Pharma. She is currently the chief medical officer at Mirador Therapeutics. She holds a B.S. in biochemistry and a M.D. from Northwestern University.
Dr. Sandborn is a world-renown clinician, entrepreneur, researcher, and executive in the biopharmaceutical industry. He is current the chief strategy officer at Mirador Therapeutics. He is a distinguished professor of medicine, emeritus and served as the chief of the division of gastroenterology at UCSD from 2011 to 2021.
Prior to UCSD, Dr. Sandborn served as a Professor of Medicine and Vice Chair, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic, from 1993 to 2010.
Ms. Hong Wu began her career as a software engineer at Qualcomm Inc. and brings over 20 years of experience in the telecommunications industry. She is the co-founder of AAPASD and is deeply committed to increasing Asian-American participation in K–12 and higher education systems across San Diego County. Hong is passionate about strengthening core academic standards and supporting student well-being. In addition, she actively supports initiatives that help individuals experiencing homelessness transition toward independence.
Beyond her work in education and community advocacy, Hong has actively volunteered at church and neighborhood events and has served as President of her local HOA board.
Dr. Mingzhu Zhang is the current President of AAPASD (2024–2026) and has served as a board member since its inception in 2022. She is also a member of the CCA Site Council (2023–2025) and previously served as Vice President of the PTA at Carmel Valley Middle School (2022–2023). Dr. Zhang has been a dedicated community volunteer for over 20 years.
Dr. Zhang was a founding member and VP of Membership at ACCEF (2004-2006), a local charitable organization. She also held several leadership roles at SABPA (SoCal Association for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Advancements), including Chairwoman of the Board (2017–2019), Vice Chairwoman (2015–2017), and President of SABPA San Diego (2013–2015).
Dr. Zhang earned her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC). She has over 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, having worked at DuPont Pharmaceuticals, Neurocrine Biosciences, and Medicilon.
Alex Hu is a Vice President at Banner Bank with over three decades of experience in the financial sector. His extensive banking expertise spans retail, commercial, and international banking.
As a committed community activist, Alex currently serves as the Treasurer for San Diego Asian Americans for Equality and as a Board Member for the Asian American Parent Alliance of San Diego. His profound commitment to civic duty is demonstrated through his previous appointments to the City of San Diego's Community Review Board on Police Practices (2018-2020) and the San Diego Community College District's Citizen’s Oversight Committee for Propositions S & N (2012-2017), where he helped ensure the responsible management of public funds for school facilities.
Alex's dedication to service extends to his leadership roles in philanthropy. He is the current President of the Rotary Club of Kearny Mesa E-Club and is honored as a Paul Harris Fellow, a distinction recognizing his significant personal contributions to The Rotary Foundation.
He is an alumnus of Nanjing University, China, where he majored in English Language and Literatures. Alex further advanced his professional education at the Pacific Coast Banking School in Seattle, Washington, graduated the executive program of Senior Officers in Banking.
Peng Peng, the visionary founder of the association, hails from the vibrant city of Beijing. After completing her undergraduate studies in China, she embarked on an exciting journey to the United States for postgraduate studies. Today, she pours her passion into community service as a dedicated full-time mother, making a meaningful impact wherever she goes.
Dr. Ye Jiang has been an active member of AAPASD since its founding in 2022 and has served on its board since 2024. She previously served as a board member of the PTSA at Pacific Middle School from 2022 to 2024.
Dr. Jiang currently works at Qualcomm, specializing in Audio and Voice AI technologies. Prior to joining Qualcomm, she worked at Audience and Acoustic Technologies. She holds BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from Southeast University in China, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University.
Dr. Yi Zhou joined the AAPASD Board this year and has long supported AAPASD-affiliated groups such as the Student Leadership Council and community activities. Dr. Zhou currently serves on the CCA School Site Council as a parent representative. A professional in wireless communication and chip design, Dr. Zhou is passionate about strengthening U.S. academic standards, merit-based admissions, and fairness for minority students. Dr. Zhou believes that when there is a calling to serve, it is the right time to step forward—and that we should never underestimate the impact even a small effort can have on our society and the next generation.
Angie Han has been actively involved in community activities since moving to San Diego as a postdoctoral researcher at UCSD. She is passionate about promoting civic engagement and raising awareness of social issues within our community. Angie joined Asian American Parent Alliance of San Diego (AAPASD) in 2022 and served on its board during 2024–2025. She has also been dedicated to community development through her work with San Diego Asian Americans For Equality (SDAAFE), which she joined in 2014 and where she has served as a board member since 2018. Angie strongly believes that “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
